Starship Technologies, the world’s leading provider of autonomous delivery services, today announced new sustainability achievements. Since launching a commercial version of the emission-free robot delivery service in 2018, Starship has calculated that 450,000 car journeys have been avoided in the areas where it provides service on a global basis.

Other achievements:

  • The robots have helped avoid 55kg (121 pounds) of microparticles, which are known to negatively affect air quality
  • Starship robots have made it possible to avoid 33kg (nearly 73 pounds) of nitrogen oxides; this is based on the average car emitting more than 800mg/km of the substance that is likely to increase respiratory issues
  • The average Starship journey only uses the same amount of energy needed to boil water for a cup of tea/coffee

Starship delivery robots are powered by zero carbon electricity and can travel nearly an entire day on a single charge. The robots operate on college campuses and in neighborhoods. In the UK, the robots are part of a significant ecosystem in the city of Milton Keynes geared toward the Council’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030 and carbon negative by 2050 in order to tackle climate change. Additional research by Starship in Milton Keynes found that close to 70% of its customers forgo driving to a store or receiving a delivery from a fuel-powered vehicle in favor of robot delivery.

“Any gas or diesel powered vehicle journey that can be removed is a win for the environment,” said Alastair Westgarth, CEO of Starship Technologies. “Our battery-powered robots are not only convenient, but they don’t contribute to pollution or traffic congestion. We are excited to play whatever part we can in providing a sustainable alternative to short vehicle trips.”

Starship Technologies operates commercially on a daily basis around the world. Its zero-emission robots make more than 140,000 road crossings every day and have completed three million commercial deliveries and travelled more than 4 million miles (7 million+ kms) globally, more than any other autonomous delivery provider.
