Sensor suite

Starship robots are equipped with state-of-the-art obstacle detection to navigate the world around them. This sensor suite includes radars, ultrasonic sensors, neural networks and 12 cameras, including time-of-flight.

Their ‘bubble of awareness’ enables them to identify objects – such as pedestrians, cyclists or animals – so they can negotiate obstacles or stop at a safe distance.

Seamless navigation

Our robots travel on sidewalks at the speed of a walking pedestrian. They safely make 150,000 road and driveway crossings every day around the world.

Large capacity

Starship robots carry up to three shopping bags, with an insulated interior which maintains hot, cold and frozen items at required temperatures.

All-day battery

A proprietary battery enables Starship robots to operate for 18 hours on a single charge.

Our wireless charging installations are a world-first, allowing the robots to charge up overnight, onsite.

Traction

Operating in all weather conditions, winter wheels allow our robots to handle snowy conditions.

Six wheels and a bogie system enable them to dismount and climb curbs.

Starship robots cross 150,000 roads every day, operating at L4 autonomy in all weather conditions.

Designed to Deliver
01 / 04
01
Safe
  • Starship robots operate at L4 autonomy, with a human able to assist remotely if needed.
  • Lightweight, they travel safely and efficiently on sidewalks at the speed of an agile pedestrian.
  • Each robot has LEDs and reflectors on the flag for visibility, plus headlights and rear indicators.
02
Secure
  • Starship robots are securely locked on delivery and can only be opened by the customer using their phone.
  • If tampered with, robots have sirens and can be tracked to the nearest inch.
03
Sustainable
  • Our robots are battery-powered for zero emission deliveries.
  • A Starship delivery uses as little energy as it takes to boil a kettle for a single cup of tea.

04
Capable
  • Our robots operate in all weathers, from the deserts of Arizona to the far north of Finland.
  • The robots operate autonomously on-device, handling all critical safety functions locally - even if the internet connection drops.

FAQ's

  • Are Starship robots really autonomous?

Yes! Starship has been operating at Level 4 autonomy since 2018, meaning little human interaction during each journey and nobody controlling them remotely.

Currently, Starship operates at over 99% autonomy, whilst some robots are now making multiple deliveries in a row, 100% autonomously.

For safety reasons, we also make sure to have human remote assistants on standby, in case they’re called upon to support.

  • Do the robots travel on roads or sidewalks/pavements?

The robots mainly travel on sidewalks/pavements and pedestrianised areas. They also cross roads and driveways when they need to, making around 150,000 crossings every day around the world.

  • How far can the robots deliver?

This varies depending on the area, but our robots generally work within a 2 mile distance from stores.

Please note: there may be some areas where we can’t deliver – please check in-app for available merchants.

Testimonials

“The customer feedback has been amazingly good – praise comes especially for the music played by the robots when the customer receives the purchases, for the delivery speed, and quite a few people comment on the cuteness of the robots as well.”
